High pitched hum from under hood??

More madness. Our '93, as mentioned in earlier posts, has started acting up with various problems which seem injection related. Restarted it today, and it was running like hell - almost dying, then reving up to 1000 rpm or so, etc, and making a loud humming, harmonic noise, about middle F on the piano, and very musical compared to normal engine noises hissing clanking whirring engine noises.
My wife came running out and said "that's the noise it was making when it started acting funny the other day!" - the episode that got this latest round of troubleshooting going.
After a while it stops making the noise and runs better but not perfect. Try as hard as I can, I cannot localize the sound (even with an ear plug in one ear and a hose plugged in the other). But it seems to be coming from the center, in the general area of the manifolds and injection hardware. The noise is erratic - I've been able to get it about 3 times in 30 or 40 starts, so I wonder if there could be some erratic sticking valve or similar thing, that could make that noise.
The noise is so distinct, and so closely linked to the running probs, that it seems it should be easy to pin down - maybe some valve bypassing or something. Anyone have any ideas.?
