...they might have fit the grooves, gone in without cutting and even worked at sealing, but it's probably American, not metric, sizes that they sold you and they may be too small, too large, stretched to fit into groove, etc., and so very likely to fail sooner. Also may not be a quality rubber type and could have cheap filler in the rubber mix.
Bravo for your creativity and for your success but it seems like a lot of work to have gone to to possibly have to re-do soon.
If you can't get them from dealer or online Saab parts places, or don't want to wait, there are o-ring distributors in many locales throughout the U.S. and if you have one nearby and had time you could take the old o-rings and the part with the grooves they fit in with you to have them measure and sell you a more likely exact fit and quality o-ring.
Home Depot's hardware section disgusts me. They have hardly anything available for sizes or types of fasteners, and what they have is terribly organized and no one pays any attention to keeping things where they belong even with the minimal order the store has imposed.
I love my local hardware store and suggest that everyone support their local store whenever possible. They've got a beautiful wall full of all sorts of hardware and specialty fasteners, in organized drawers, maintained by a "rack jobber," and it's been a lifesaver for my Saab and many other projects through the years.
