The motor is located underneath the rear lip of the spare tire compartment. You'll see 2 10-mm bolt heads on the rear lip - it's under there.
Often the screws holding the cover onto the gearbox loosen and fall off. That's what happened to my '88. And that may be what caused the POP on yours when it let go.
You can take off those bolts that I mentioned above to pull the gearbox forward to see if the cover is loose. Usually the cover screws find their way down to the forward end of the spare tire compartment. Don't forget to clean the grit and lint off the parts and give them a little grease before putting it back together.
Sometimes the gear fails, and you have to dig up a replacement.
