You never know when explosives come in handy! Actually, as far as skills and technique goes, yeah the ability to make sense of military manuals plus proper training did help, but most of what I've learned then and since has been "seat of the pants fly by" learning. Whatever get's the job done with as little effort and fewest mistakes. The "don't tell me I can't do it" attitude comes from a boyhood friend of mine who's approach to anything mechanical was similar to Kevin Costner's approach to golf in the movie Tin Cup. You know the scene where he beats all challenger's using only shovels and yard tools? My friend broke all rules, used whatever tools and means of accomplishing anything and somehow succeeded. He'd do things like drive his high milage V8 pickup truck without ever changing the oil or filter. He just added more oil when required. The drive train gave out before the engine did.
