You might want to check one more thing. My "new" spg needed a valve cover gasket. From previous experience with the '85 900T, the "upper guide" installed inside the valve cover gets hard. When you first start the car in the morning, a sound as you describe is heard. When the car is warm, it goes away. The new part is made of a very soft rubber, while the old one hardened with age to the hardness if hard plastic.

After replacing the rubber guide, the noise is now gone! Check page 215-1, figure 1, in the Bentley's manual for an illustration.
