How horrible a sound? Posted by RS [Email] (#15) [Profile/Gallery] (more from RS) on Sun, 10 Apr 2005 08:40:45 In Reply to: Looks like I need to replace the alternator., hondaman, Sun, 10 Apr 2005 07:29:19 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
You can get a whirring sound if you have toothed belts.
For the bushings, go with the rubber ones. There have been a few guys on the board who have suffered rapid failures of the poly bushings.
If the alternator is still charging and there is no ominous loosensess in the pulley, screeching or grinding of bearings, you might want to consider keeping it. That's not to say that bearing failures never occur or that windings and diode failures never happen, but they're rare. The bushings reduce shock loadings on the bearings and make them last longer than they would otherwise. In that respect, poly bushings (if they lasted) would be counterproductive.
When you finish the bushings, be careful to reinstall the ground wire and make sure that the ground wire doesn't have bad lugs or broken strands.
And, while you have it out, pop off the voltage regulator and take a look at the brushes, if they're getting worn down to 4 or 5 mm (IIRC) you might want to think about replacing the brushes or the whole regulator.
