Most likely you have the later sanyo-seiki rotary type compressor which has to be spinning well above idle in order to cool the car efficiently. Conversion to R 134 will only reduce the cooling, not improve it. The rotary compressors are quiet, compared to the earlier Sanden compressors that were noisy. However, the Sandens are piston type and cool very well at idle, but are noisy. If you really want ac that works at low rpm, stick with r 12, and renew the old components on your system, and see if you can find a Sanden compressor in good shape. Seems that it wouldn't be a big deal to swap them out. I recently replaced my compressor, installed a new expansion valve and receiver/dryer, and before everything had the old junk vacuumed out. I am happy with the result, using freeze 12, an environmentally friendly replacement for r 12
