My sincerest thanks to RS for the suggestions to solve this 1990 Saab's erratic behavior.
I know this is at least 8 months later, but this is my daughter's car and shes at college, we had 90+ " of snow and my life got very complicated. At any rate, today it was almost 60 degrees so I charged the battery this morning and reread you suggestions. So I cleaned the two pins on the NTC valve housing and the connector. I removed and cleaned the AIC valve with carb cleaner- it was pretty clean to begin with so not much washed out. Then I looked at the connector and pins for the AIC valve, one male/female of the two was corroded (we live near salt water) and I cleaned those with some fine needle files as best I could. Then I said well, what have I got to lose, checked the oil level and turned the key.
Sun of gun! It started right up, and idled right down, did not hunt, just like a regular Saab! I mean this car has not been cranked since last December when I last tried to start it (it did not start then). I let it idle for a while, it had a very light tap that went away when I shut the engine and restarted it the rap stopped. It seems to be running fine. My daughter drove it around this afternoon and said it ran well.
So I am in your debt. I put a new (used) transmission in this car myself two years ago and the car was never dependable after that. It seems likely that removing the connectors during the transplant must have broken what was then a very tenuous electrical contact. I had this car worked on by the local garage that works on a lot of Saabs and they couldn't fix it, they had it in the shop last summer at least 3 times and the car was driving me to deep despair. I've owned Saabs since 1979 and never had a problem like this.
I live in Massachusetts near New Bedford. If you every get near here I owe you a dinner, drinks and dessert.
Thanks again for your help on this. Best, Tony
