In early to mid 90s when the R134a started to show up, the car manufacturers stated that you pretty much needed to replace the whole system in older cars.
Volvo even came out with a specific list of parts that needed to be replaced on certain years. Early cars; everything including evaporator hoses and such. Later cars only o-rings and even later cars just empty and fill.
But just like the bumble bee not knowing that she can't fly, if you didn't know about it all and just filled the system it probably worked just dandy.
Now after many years and lots of shops doing conversion we know that it isn't that big of a deal and also, those cars are not getting any younger so even if you followed all the rules and filled them with R12 they could still fail or leak.
If an A/C system has been dormant and empty for a long time you always run a risk by scaring it back to life and the compressor might seize up on you or hoses start to leak. This is the case whatever cooling media you are using.
By fixing the obvious leaks and convert it to R134a, you might have a good system for some more years or it might break right away (which it would have done with R12 too).
Replacing the expansion valve and rec/dryer is always a good idea since they are many times the original ones sitting there from the factory, and they tend to go bad after so many years of use.
So my estimated guess for you is to replace the dual A/C manifold hose, rec/dryer and expansion valve. Install R134a fill nipples and charge the system with Ester oil, leak dye and R134a.
