I just removed an automatic transmisson from my 86 this past weekend. I am guessing your cable slipped a bit causing your shifts to be off. You might be able to get away with loosening the 3 special nuts that hold the shift assembly in place. Once loose you might be able to slide the assembly enough to compensate for the change. The other way is to remove the shift assembly bolts completely, rotate the assembly to gain access to the screws holding the bottom cover on, and remove this cover. You will then see the shift cable and the attachment to the shift mechanism. It is time consuming but certain doable.
