Allen Range Road is a dead-end road to nowhere in the rocky and granite-ledge north end of town. It was never farmable and doesn't even grow trees that well but it has two thriving junkyards. It was laid out to keep on going but is only a quarter mile or so long before it descends into swamp too wet to cross, and it's gown up to trees, abandoned past there for probably a hundred years.
You need Bean boots to visit even in summer. Old tires and car parts poke out of the wettest places, with hoods, door panels and floor mats laid down to hopscotch on. I spotted a 10-year-old poplar tree growing out of an old whitewall. New this year, piles of cut brush, alders and grey birch, in an area too wet to even think of putting cars one high. On solid level ground, cars are stacked two and in some places three high. Some 60's vehicles stuck around back edges in the woods.
It's mostly a crusher yard, whatever parts he can sell are gravy.
No tacos, but John the owner's lovely wife does her ceramics in a studio off the main office shack.
Customers include some local roughnecks, a few shrewd Yankees like Vern and me, and a mix of our local varieties of immigrants, including, sometimes, throngs of young skinhead Russians in leather jackets, looking like Mafia wannabes, hunting parts for their hopped-up BMWs.
