engine rebuilders advice wanted Posted by Saabu [Email] ![]() ![]() |
In a bit of a strange situation in rebuilding an 86 SPG block.
Crank has been polished and judged to be 'good', well within spec on con and main journals.
Pistons have been remachined including big ends, and measuring with dial caliper within big end, i find them almost right on spec. All this machining work has been done by one of the best shops in town.
Main Bearings are plastigaging fine.
However, when plastigaging con rod bearings, i'm getting 2 thou, and max spec is 2.4 thou. In my mind that's too loose. I've used a set of FM bearings as well as some VP Vandervell and i get the same reading.
If all components are within spec, why would i get such a loose fit?
also, what should i do? i am considering getting another crank i have ground for .010 oversize con rod bearings (which i have in my possession)_ and having them make sure journals are on the fat side, then see if that solves this problem.
or could the cause be in the piston big ends?
thx in advance,
Wayne in Calgary
