Basically, you remove the switches from the console and open them up. You can then clean the contacts. Inside the switches are little metal rockers with circular contact pads on them. The contact pads will be pretty obviously covered with carbon. Clean that carbon off with some Scotchbrite or fine sandpaper. Just clean off the carbon buildup - don't polish off the metal plating.
I've skipped over one part - taking the switch apart. And the harder part - putting it back together. The switches come apart pretty easily once they are out of the cluster. Be warned that the switches have a few parts that will fall out, and a spring that wants to fly out. So disassemble the switches one at a time, over a bowl or plate, and beware of flying parts. Examine the mechanism carefully so that you understand how it goes together. Once you clean the switch and put it back together, make sure the action is smooth - if it is binding, you may have assembled it backwards.
Disassembling, cleaning, and reassembling the switches aren't too bad, just be careful, that's all.
