THANKS to ANDERS / SWEDECAR for this valuable information!!!! I've summarized below some of what Anders has already posted along with my own experience to help anyone else:
My symptoms: slightly elevated idle; hissing from brake booster after shutting down the car; bad braking despite a new master cylinder, new pads and fresh brake fluid. I could NOT stop in a short distance despite the amount of effort I put on the brake pedal.
The Solution:
P/N 8929010 (pictured below) is found inside the brake booster. It is located inside the cavity that accepts the brake master cylinder. The disk has a hole in the middle for the rod that pushes the master cylinder piston.
That seal usually wears out around the rod you see in the center and it can be faulty diagnosed as a leaking brake booster. You can see the enlarged opening in the picture below. The enlargement results in a vacuum leak and considerably diminished vacuum assist.
It is very easy to remove the seal by prying it out with a screwdriver. The new one is installed by pushing it into place with your finger and maybe a little help with a screwdriver.
This seal is available only for 86 and older master cylinders/boosters. On the 87 and up they don't sell it as a separate piece. It costs $30.00 and can only be found at the dealer. Replacing this seal is a whole lot easier and cheaper than replacing the entire booster unit!
I did not have to remove any brake lines to remove and replace the seal. I unbolted the master cylinder from the booster and gently placed it aside to allow enough room to work.
Again, many thanks to Anders for providing the information about this part and the replacement process.
I hope this information can help someone else. Feel free to email me w/any questions.
Aloha, Chris 85t
