A bad bearing may make other sounds besides squealing. Does the sound start/stop when you press in the clutch? Does it happen on acceleration/deceleration? Just idling in the driveway?
I'd bet it's the pilot bearing for the input shaft that sits pressed in the flywheel itself, but that's just a vague guess. It could also be the throwout bearing on the slave cylinder.
If you've got the plastic cover removed, you're one-third of the way into a clutch job. You could buy a new clutch kit and replace everything in there (disc, pressure plate, slave cyl + bearing, pilot bearing, input shaft seal) and then forget about this part of your car for the next 6 years. Brute force approach, yes, but you can get on with your life (or other areas of the car).
