That's the beginning of the end. Starts with the crunch (and SRS is likely triggered). Did you pull the lights or has your SRS not triggered yet? Progressive failure is that the horns stop working or like me, stick on. The connector is just a flat multi-wire band with enough slack to allow the wheel to turn. Safe to drive? Well, the airbag won't work but it also won't spontaneously fire either. There's a chance the steering could bind when turning as well. I've repaired mine by stripping back with broken wires and resoldering. Hardest thing is to remember to reinstall correctly so that you won't snap the wire on your first turn.
