With that info in hand, I'd bet that there's carbon tracking on the cap. The spark will *only* go where the distributor rotor is pointed unless there's carbon tracking on the cap or if the spark plug wires leak between each other. It can't fire cylinders at random unless there's some sort of alternate current path.
You might want to change the spark plug wires, cap, and rotor just in case. Only get Bosch cap & rotor and Bougicord (or magnacore) spark plug wires.
Get your old ignition module to keep as a spare, it's probably still good. The ignition module failure mode is "not sparking at all" instead of what your mechanic told you.
Let me ask, did you change spark plug wires or spark plugs before this hapened?
