I just put my '92 convertible on the road a month ago. Fortunately, the top looks great (!!!) but everything else needs work- shifter connections, heat shield, parking brake cables, vacuum leaks out the wazoo, rear window is a pain in the butt to zip back in, passenger seat release/power seat cables hanging up, carpet torn, accumulator leaking slightly, brake pads are crap, transmission leaks, coolant service needed, front suspension squeaks, slow window syndrome, dot dot dot... but trust me, these are awesome cars! YOU WILL HAVE FUN.
I kept my '88 900 though.... turning into a winter-specific car, and a really, really good one at that.
Some website somewhere has step-by-step top replacement instructions. Of course, I forgot where that was. Sorry. Be sure to read service bulletin 313 about lining up the park position and window guides toward the end.
The way I see it, we are doing our part to keep some nice 900s going well into middle-age. Poor Jordan, still going through withdrawal!
Anyway, I always digress on these things. Look at other people when you're driving and watch the heads turn. I still can't believe it. I'm averaging 3000 miles a month. That's pathetic and wasteful, and I had six interviews two weeks ago on opposite ends of NY, but I still like it. A few pointers:
Keep with original top colors. I saw a teal bimmer with a green top today and did not like it. I actually am warming up to my dark blue car with a black top instead of a blue top as was offered later.
HAVE FUN.
