I have an 1985 900 SPG with about 100,000 on it.

Engine and transmission seem very strong but there is a whinning noise which can be heard loudly when the passenger window is open. It is most prevalent on deceleration in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears with first and 2nd being the worst. I have not heard it when travelling at normal speeds in 3rd, 4th or 5th. For example, if I am preparing to stop and shift down, from 3rd to 2nd as I begin to let the clutch out in 2nd the whine starts and gets progressivly louder as I continue to let the clutch out(the sound will go away if I push the clutch back in) and I can hear it until the car comes to a complete stop. Its harder to hear the noise if the car windows are closed. I think this whining sound could be considered normal when shifting down, but it's got a lot louder in the past 6 months and would like to get some opinions as to what you guys think is going on, if it is serious and how it can be fixed.
