That it's a 92 n/t is better than a 88T. It's always a risk, but there's a few common sense rules when dealing with used. First up is do you know why the donor car is undrivable? If because of a wreck, then that eliminates tranny failure. Then consider overall miles, plus overall car condition. The older boxes had a magnetic drain plug which was a good way to determine (stuff attached to the plug) if teeth are broken plus general shredding from abuse. Then does it shift into all gears using the stick shift with the engine not running? The last test is before paying for and taking it home: while it's sitting on the ground or a bench, find a way to turn the primary gear (clutch shaft) and shift through all gears, then open up the side cover and look at the shifting mechanism as it shifts through all gears. Anything wrong there will be obvious.
