Excellent tip from Harold. Might be easier to rummage around and find a metric nut of same thread instead of cutting the nylon part off a keps nut.
But first you have to get past your problem of removing the nut now it's part way on:
1. Try the slip-joint pliers or just hard hand pressure to hold it down into the taper as much as possible.
2. Or try grabbing the threads just above the nut with something - - needle nose pliers, skinny long-nose vise grips, even tin snips.
3. Spin the ratchet FAST and it might start unscrewing - - a quick sharp snap of the wrench.
To install it you might not need to use another nut first, if you oil the threads and the nylon part of the new nut. Friction will be temporarily much lower but there's no need to worry about it loosening once it's properly tightened.
But keep any oil off the taper or its bore, and make sure they're clean of anything, even road dust, that would keep them from mating snugly.
