I mis stated the source of the leak, it is where the brake pedal mechanism goes through the firewall. If that's the loaction of the slave cylinder I had a mechanic replace that and he probably took no steps to seal it. It's a hard to reach area on the engine side of a 1980 car. I globbed both sides with silicone as best I could. Is there a better technique?
The carpet pad material can hold a tremendous amount of moisture without wetting the carpet much. (The pad material might be perfect for a cigar humidor.) My hunch is Saab used a locally produced material and there might be room for improvement.
There may not be an effective sound deadening material that is better at wicking moisture.
