Hi,
Apologies that this is a touch long. I had a slow leak on the back right tire (88 900TC) and then a few days ago went out to find the tire completely flat. used a tank to fill it enough to get it around the corner to the tire shop. they took it off, put it in the tub and showed me that there was a cut in the sidewall, on the inside, which wasn't fixable (they apparently don't make the Pirelli p8000 that was on there, and the closest match to the tread was a Falken- but that's another story).
I figured I must have hit a pot-hole odd or something. Well driving away from the tire shop I heard a clicking sound (like a playing card in a bicycle spoke) coming from under the back seat. I believe I've noticed a sound of this nature before when driving by a wall or something (where you get a bit of an echo) but it seemed more pronounced.
When I got home I reached behind the wheel and felt little to no clearance between the tire/rim and the parking brake cable. I jacked it up, took the wheel off, and noticed the rubber on the cable was worn down in two spots (right next to each other) and the metal sleave of the cable was a bit worn as well. There was corresponding wear on a two inch section of the rim, and perhaps on the inside wheel weight (tough to tell since those things are soft and scratch easy). It seemed as though the parking brake cable was bowed out more than it should be, although nothing appeared broken or disconnected in any way to be causing this.
There's a rubber grommet there that the cable passes through. It didn't appear to be in any different shape than the one on the other side (took the wheel off to compare). But I pushed the cable inwards a bit and put a zip tie around the rubber grommet to keep it held in place.
So I'm guessing the cable wore through the tire. Has anyone ever seen the cable "bow" like this before, or what might have caused it to do so? The cable still seems functional, though I'd look to replace it and fix it right at some point.
Thanks for any feedback.
Regards,
Brian
