I picked up an '86T this weekend. It had been abandoned > 1 year ago by PO and sat under a tree on a farmette not far from my home. I saw the residents outside back in early April to ask about it, they knew little about the car's history but offered it to me if I would cover the $35 cost of the title. I took possession this weekend.

Long story short: It's toast, rust has taken its toll. No surprise there, I figure I'll part it out (alloy wheels, grill, corner lights, etc and may even use the tranny to convert my '93 automatic.

My question regards what ails the engine. On starting it blew a bunch of black smoke, partly because it had sat for so long, I guess, but mostly because it was only running on 2 or three cylinders at low rpm or at steady high rpm. The odd thing (to me) is what would happen when I put my foot into it: it cleaned right out on hard acceleration and seemed pretty damned zippy. If the steering wheel wasn't shaking so violently I'd have kept playing around with it, but I thought it best just to get it off the road and into the garage. I'll add that it dumped about a quart of oil from the driver's side of the motor when I finally got it home (origin undetermined).

Am I on the right track to think that the APC signal takes over when I floor it and that overrides a faulty base ignition signal? Oil leak notwithstanding, I guess I'm wondering if there is any hope for the motor. I'm not likely to work very hard at diagnosis, but if this is a classic condition I'd appreciate the info and feedback.
