you need to buy a $10 digital voltmeter, then check voltage across the terminals with the engine idling. if its under 14 volts your alt is not charging the battery enough. there could be numerous reasons for this:
as mentioned, voltage regulator brushes could be worn down resulting in poor contact with stator. this could be changed out leaving the alt. in the car but you'd need some L-shaped (offset) slot screwdriver or some such tool to get the regulator out of the alternator without removing the alt (that is a pain in the ass - dont go there if you can help it).
thin single wire on alternator could be disconnected - this wire is the one which signals to the battery light on the dash - if its disconnected the battery wont get charged at all. check it for connection.
bad ground wire from alt to engine block - check it too.
alternator could be faulty - stator could be faulty requiring rebuild.
or complete alternator could be faulty, requiring replacement.
There are electrical tests you can perform going from the D terminal to ground, and B terminal to ground (its in the Bentley manual) but if you arent getting 14 + volts you need to either check all connections, swap voltage regulator (in-car) or yank the alt and get it tested or simply rebuilt or replaced. A rebuilt usually comes with a new voltage regulator.
