Ground wires in hatch

Yes, another ground question. But I have read the ground threads and still find myself in need of addtional info. I have disassembled the left side of the luggage area (90 SPG). This reveals a number of wiring harnesses and connector blocks.
Specifically
1) 3 connector block. Green (tail lights, hatch), Yellow (defroster), Black (ground). The latter two wires are 12 gauge, so I figure the ground is for the defroster (and maybe common ground for all hatch lights).
2) 2 position block. Red wire (brake lights, hatch), 1 free terminal
3) 2 position block. White/Purple (defroster)
Observations
1) Bad ground in hatch wiring. Explicitly grounding left hatch light cluster makes all hatch lights work normally.
2) Luggage light works (has good ground)
3) There only appear to be 2 black wires (one thick, one thin) heading to the cabin (under rear seat) from the rear fender well.
So are there any more connectors in the hatch? Does the heavy black wire in the 3 position block ground the defroster, tail and brakes lights? I am not looking to hack a solution, I want to understand which wire should be doing the grounding and chase it down. From earlier investigating, this heavy black wire heads from the back seat to the trunk where is is joined with other grounds (fuel pump, left/right light clusters).
