I've replaced the rack on our '89 non-turbo; here's what I can remember...
Get the car as high up as you can, more room to wrestle with stuff underneath. (Make sure it's supported solidly...)
The pinch bolt on the intermediate steering shaft is easier to reach from the passenger compartment by pulling back the rubber boot at the firewall. My instructions told me to undo that from underneath (PITA).
It might be possible to do this with the exhaust in place, but I found it much easier if the head-pipe is removed.
You'll want at least one helper when feeding the new rack in thru the side. It's easy to tear the rack boots on the body/sheetmetal.
