As long as the rebuild kits are available it's best to use them.
One critical part is the O-ring/bushing around the PB lever/shaft. I've found that sticking PB's are often caused by dirt/grease buildup around this O ring...often the O ring is completely gone or the shaft is rusted and water has gotten inside the PB mechanism.
Same with dust boots and piston seals. The pistons are hard to obtain so used ones are often the only way to go.
I've yet to see a good fix for clunking brakes...even the rebuilts with square C-shaped shims spot welded onto the yokes to take up the slack between the yoke and the caliper cylinder don't work for very long. The clunk comes back in a few years. IMHO it was just a poor design...the 88+ much better.
