Hey there.. I'm in the same boat and contemplating which route to go. of course total rebuilt is best. saabsite.net sells them for about 1,400 plus a 500 core charge.
I check out a place call andrews of princeton, they sell partial rebuilt.. meaning they take them from the car and replace only what is worn and pinion bearings.. they go for about 850.00 and 150 shipping in the usa..
I hate to just get a used, because you don't know what your getting even if it has low miles. you don't know how much the other person beat it.
remember the prices above are just for the trans.. then you have labor costs if you have someone install it.
I am having someone install mine, I do 99% of all work on my baby 87 C900, but after thinking about it and seeing that there is a whole science to installing a trans on a saab, I decided to save myself a headache later.
not an easy thing finding a good trans nowadays.. hope this helped a little.
