Searching for a missing wire!

I finally figured out a very strange problem in my 1991 900S convertible- the coolant temp gauge shoots to the top when I turn the ignition switch to ON and then drops to full cold after start up. Unfortunately it NEVER moves!
In the engine bay I found the gauge sensor (below the thermostat housing, single "mushroom-shaped" connector) unplugged, but there is NO wire lead to be found. Nothing! I opened up the harness that runs on top of the engine, looked the entire bay over and this wire is gone! I know it's supposed to be there, but what is going on?? What color should I be looking for?
I purchased this car recently and I have no way of knowing what happened to the wire...
