Crud in the line, created by the deterioration of the clutch line from the Master to the slave cylinder can cause the clutch slave to malfunction. When this gunk clogs the rusting line that runs near the ground, the pressure in the line can cause leaks in the line and sediment clogs the line and next thing ya know you're clutchless in Rochester. I cut out the rusting section from about midway up the Fender wall and about 2 inches at the other end, fitted high pressure line with hose clamps and, by repeapeatpeatedly pressing the clutch I flushed the remainder of crud from the line. I plugged the open end with a screw to build up pressure and thus flushing the remaining gunking crud. Crud in the slave cylinder was also flushed out. I found a clutch bleeder bolt from an individual I've bought many SAAB parts from before on the great auction site in the sky. Eeuroparts has the hose/metal line unit for this replacement and I will eventually probably replace it but for now the hose and clamps are holding pressure. I'll probably zip-tie the new hose to the frame to keep it from floppping around and to reproduce the rigidity of the steel line, now crumbling in my hands.
In retreospect, I think I would have unscrewed the line from the slave and pumped the clutch to test the flow pressure here, and would have replaced this line before going after the clutch/slave end of things. However, there was crud in the fluid in the slave so I assume, sooner or later the crud would have compromised the O-rings. And now I have the benefit of knowing how the clutch slave works, how to remove and replace the clutch, how to use fat nuts in this procedure as well as the many and varied uses of a 5 gallon bucket handle- As part of replacing the clutch I'm using Vise grips to depress the plate against itself at the 3 points (I have vice grips at 2 of the 3 and the wire bucket handle also wedged under the teeth - the bucket handle is not quite thick enough so the visegrips add the extra pressure to simplifyy this project
