One of my favorite solvents. I've never heard of using acetone as a fuel additive for the purpose of increasing mileage, but it has been discussed as an octane booster. I believe on the performance site some years back was talk of a homemade octane booster formula that went something like this: 70% toulene/lacquer thinner/acetone/MEK, %25 mineral spirits, 5% auto transmission fluid. Diesel fuel or kerosene can be added in place of mineral spirits, and any light oil in place of transmision fluid. My choice of light oil would be Marvel Mystery oil. As you can see, just about any petroleum based product can be used, including Zippo lighter fluid, charcoal lighter fluid, and lamp oil. And then there's methanol, which if I'm not mistaken is one of the ingredients in mineral spirits and paint thinner. 100% rubbing alcohol will also burn fine. Those who use such fuel additives for octane boosting use at least 10% additive to 90% gasoline. My thinking is that if bought in large quantities (55 gallon drums), a homemade additive would result in good performance, a clean engine, plus cut the cost of fuel, especially with a notable mileage increase. All I need now is a storage bin in the back yard to store all these drums of highly flameable industrial solvents.
