if the light is lit, there is a fault in the system someplace, providing its not something simple like bad grounds, loose bulbs, etc. there is a test plug (dealer test or well equipped indy test) underneath the accordian rubber in front of gearshift on lower console (tween cubbyhole and shifter). if the srs light is lit, you're running without the airbag functioning, so if it's not your habit, make sure you have your belts on.
the shrieking noise could be loose belts, but if its usually occurs on start up may be a bad harmonic balancer (crank pully) which is at bottom of engine at front (firewall end). if you have oil leaks at the crank seals that can speed destruction of the rubber on the balancer.
could be an a/c idler pulley as well i guess, but i'm not as familiar with the sound of one of those failing. just a couple of things to check.
how many miles are on the car? and is it manual or auto? mark :-)
