You didn't say what engine - 8 or 16V. The 8V is the older CIS engine as opposed the mass air meter LH fuel system. The later LH is a bit more fussy as to regular tune-up issues. My guess is that you bought your car after it had been tuned up nicely and you're obviously still benefiting from that good work. But, engines do need attention and what's likely to happen is a lot of things going bad all at once, or in quick succession. Case in point: I bought a good used 82 non turbo (my first SAAB) with 150K miles as well and for almost three years didn't do a thing to it. I often marveled at how little I had to do to it. Then things started going south, with rough idling, difficult cold starts, lowered performance, plus starter, clutch, brake and bearing issues. After the regular tune-up issues and once I began learning the mysteries of SAAB maintenance, I discovered that my distributor advance disc had frozen (baked oil), and the vac advance unit was shot. How long it had been that way I have no idea, but regular maintenance would have discovered it well before then. Just today I found out that one of the connections for the auxilary air valve was loosened at the throttle body (I drive a 16VT converted to CIS engine, which includes the older aux air valve). It had obviously popped free while under boost within the past few days. Were I not accustomed to checking under the hood on a regular basis, who knows how long it would have taken me to figure that one out? How I noticed it was only because I opened the hood to deal with a blown air cabin fuse. I noticed it when my eye caught the coloring of brass, which is the color of the port on which the aux air hose connects. I wasn't looking for that problem, but something in the back of my head said, "There shouldn't be anything brass colored there." That something was just the familiarity with the engine and how it looks. Get your engine tuned up and stop tempting the continuum.
