Here you go. 1). Tune it up now. New plugs, gapped right, new cap, rotor. Drain oil, but before you do go down and get a bottle of techron and dump it in with a half tank of gas-do not go by the directions. The gas you will want to use is 87 octane. It runs cooler when you’re testing. High nox means your car is running hot and or lean. After you have gone through the half tank of gas w\techron then fill up again with 87. Now you want to run car until half empty and drain oil and replace filter. Run till empty and fill up again w\87 oct. At this point you will have new oil, plugs and what-not. Your timing must be ok to or you would have failed no matter what-Ca only allows timing to be off + or - one degree.
). Drain coolant, flush and refill. Remember your car has high nox because the combustion temp is high so we want to get it as low as possible. Another thing to do is buy the lowest thermostat their is and put it in-that's one thing I did as well.
). Make sure there are no vacuum leaks-more air= leaner which equals high nox.
). Adjust the AMM-this is easy-do a search on the board. You want to turn it in a few times to increase the amount of gas-this will help a lot because they test at such low rpm's.
). Increase air pressure on the front tires to 45 plus. This equals less resistance which equals less NOX.
). Finally and this is the most important part. What gears did he test the car in? Did he test 15 mph in second and 25 in third? If so tell him to test 15 mph in first and 25 in second. This will cause less load on the engine which will decrease NOX which will make your car pass.
). Get the car nice and hot before you test. HC and or high NOX can be a slippery slope so you want to get the CAT as hot as possible. Let car idle when you’re waiting for the test.
). Turn heater on high and turn fans on high while testing.
). Have him point fan at front of car.
). If you do the above you will pass.
Good luck
