Heating up on hills

I've only had my 1987 900s for a few weeks, but I notice that it seems to heat up to about 3/4 on the gauge when going up long uphills, but the rest of the time seems to stay at halfway on the gauge.
Is this normal behavior? I know that the guage reads green until you reach the very top, but I'm not sure how to interpret what's happening.
