Just kidding, think that happened from a broken pinion gear or diff. pig.
MS, Keep an eye out for a Snap-On, Mac, or other tool truck parked at a service garage, and snag the guy, and he'll probably have the hex key socket, though at a price reflecting its quality. Get both 12mm and 1/2" if you can afford to. (Or ask at a garage what day and time the truck comes, and leave ample cash with the mechanic plus a written description of what you want. Or get the Snap-On guy's phone number and call him to pre-order.)
Next, make sure your hex opening is clean all the way to the bottom.
Then get an electric impact gun or if you're lucky enough to have a compressor, an air impact gun. Its force, in multiple small blows and very sudden, is far more likely to get things started, and I wouldn't worry about cracking the case.
With the impact wrench, you can keep strong upward pressure applied to keep the key bottomed in the plug and keep the force straight, not angled as your breaker bar on an L-shaped key was.
Start with the 12 mm and only go to the 1/2" if that doesn't work and rounds completely.
I like the "drive till hot-ice cube" idea. Could also apply local heat with a propane torch or even two playing there at once. They won't make enough heat to damage the aluminum and might make enough extra expansion to free things up.
With a new plug, maybe a little pipe dope or even Never-Seize would be a good thread sealant.
