I just replaced my head gasket a few weeks ago. Quotes at the dealer, a Saab Indy, and a general repair Indy were in the $1,000+ range. I repaired myself in about 12 hours (over several days while waiting for parts) for around $250 ($100 for the machine shop to check the head and about $150 in actual parts). If you are not experienced working on cars you probably do not want to attempt this yourself.
If you do it yourself, buy a quality 1/2" drive Tork socket for the head bolts.
You can easily slip into a big case of "while-i'm-at-it" and replace the water pump, hoses, belts, timing chain tensioner, head work (new valves, etc) while you are there, but I elected not to as mine were less than a year old. At a minimum you'll need new oil, oil filter, and coolant. I limited my upgrades to new head bolts, a cooler thermostat and a cooler fan switch.
