It's a lot of work to swap them, so it wouldn't be a bad idea to take the replacement speedometer to a shop and have them replace the odometer drive gear and calibrate it. It's a common failure - the odometer drive gear is a nylon gear on a metal shaft. The gear shrinks, cracks, and loses its gip on the shaft. When it's cold, some of them have just enough grip on the shaft to let the odo advance a bit, as you've experienced. According to the one in my '89, I've driven 60 miles in the last 4-1/2 years.
Three of the 5 900s I've owned have had the odometers go south (one gave it up while I was driving to the South.)
