...so I don't suppose there is any Stellite coating on at least 2/3 of the side/edge/perimeter surfaces of the valves (i.e. where it counts). My guess is that heat dissipation is the reason for the sodium core which wicks heat away to the stem of the valve so that heat is transferred to the cylinder head over a broader more widely dispersed area and it's more economical to core out a valve in a softer alloy then harden it, than it is to machine a harder, more hard-wearing alloy in the first place. I would also guess this is a solution more typically applied in air-cooled / aero engines.
Anyways I think I will indeed take my chances and throw the head on and monitor engine compression because my labour taking off and replacing the head is not such a big deal but the cost of another head, then valve seals, machining etc. is (a big deal) - my wife considers this my 'vanity car' so I pay at least twice for any repair or minor enhancement (to give her her due coincidentally the only car she had ever lusted after prior to our meeting, apart from the Citroen DS (her brother was a fan) was a 3-dr OG 900 (black, like mine).
Thank you all (any other information would certainly be appreciated), I will keep you informed.
Best regards,
Glen
