I've got to say that even with a completely hooped amm the car should run better than described. The AMM does very little once the car is up to temperature anyway. In fact, with an unplugged AMM the car is usually still quite driveable.

I think you have got to do some basic diagnosis here- no more parts-replacing until you at least have a general idea of where you should be checking. Your wallet will thank you.

This means narrowing things down to one of 3 areas: spark, air and fuel.It seems like a dumb statement but it is often overlooked in the rush to find a cure (ask me how i know).

I would start with the spark part- the ignition system (because i have a hunch that the problem is here). I would do this by hooking up an inductive timing light and taking a look at the signal (ie. the flashing light).

Does the signal drop out or become eratic? If everything is OK, the flashes should be nice and regular at all times. Try the timing light on all the leads including the center lead from the ignition coil. An irregular signal that drops out when the car starts to stumble is indicative of an ignition system problems. Rev the engine to above 3500 rpm . . . are things still nice and steady? If you encounter a bad signal I would look at the ignition control unit or crank sensor the coils almost never go bad.

Air is pretty easy- just make sure there are no vac leaks or missing vac lines anywhere. This is easier on a non-turbo car (like yours). That said, it would probably take a fairly substantial leak to cause the symtoms you describe.

Fuel is a bit trickier but not that hard. Here's my basic test. Pull the return line at the fuel rail and stick the end in a clear glass bottle. Jumper the fuel pump (at the fuse box)and run the pump. Without getting too precise . . . a whole bunch of fuel should come shooting out. There are volume and pressure tests that i suppose you could do but this is probably good enough for a start.

Lastly, get a Bentley manual. Once you have figured out in which of the 3 areas your problem lies you'll need to do further tests and you can find these in the Bentley.
