well, here's a strange problem (oil in distributor cap)

For the past six months, every couple of thousand miles I have to take off my distributor cap and clean out the cap, rotor and the inside of the distributor because there is a bunch of oil in there. And every time, the oil reappears like magic. How the heck is this oil getting in there? I know that the distributor is attached to the engine, but is there actually a path that oil can travel through from the engine to the distributor? This is getting annoying, because I'll just be driving along and the car will die because there is too much oil interfering with the contacts. How can I solve this problem, and is it a sign of major problems? The car is an '89 S. Thanks in advance for the help everyone.
