Heat control knobs' rod keeps falling off

86 900 SPG: Ever since I took the dash apart the rod keeps falling off one side or the other after using it once or twice. It is very easy to reach in and balance the rod in place again but it never stays. I'm thinking it might be because I haven't replaced all the screws etc. from when I removed the dash and because it isn't tight it works its way loose. Thing is, it was so long ago that I can't remember what screws or nuts I removed when I took the dash out except for the long black screws that go up behind the front of the dash in the middle and to the left.
Any help is appreicated.
Thanks,
RJ
