Yes Saab did make a leather gear shift knob and boot. They are both genuine leather. Most 5-speeds got rubber gear knobs and rubber accordian style boots. The leather was an upgrade or available on special-edition packages. Walnut gear knobs are another optional accessory. Leather gear knobs to the best of my knowledge are no longer available through Saab. You can check the classifieds here at Saabnet. You can place a free parts wanted classified here as well. I've seen them on ebay (rarely). Expect to pay a premium price. Leather gear boots and walnut gear knobs are on ebay all the time.

If your current leather knob is just worn, you might try taking it to a shoe repair shop to see if they can reskin it for you. It may be cheaper in the long run.

Another option, if it's just lightly worn, is to spray it with a couple coats of black fabric/vinyl paint from an auto parts store. Spray it and let it soak in to the worn areas, then wipe the excess off the unworn areas so you don't get heavy build-up. Do this a couple of times with about 20 minutes between coats. Then, give the whole thing a final coat and don't wipe it down. You can buff it with black shoe polish afterwards. I did this to my worn leather boot and it looks like new.
