When working on a tranny, in order to lock the main shaft for torqueing the primary gear nut is to engage 5th, then disemble the reverse gear bracket/tab and slip reverse gear into place. Somehow that may be what has happened inside the box. How I don't know unless the shift selector mechanism exploded, which will be obvious when the side cover is removed and you attempt to shift the tranny and see what the selector mechanism does. Can you shift the gears without the engine on? If so, that says the shift mechanism is sound and then the problem points to the primary gear.
