iPod thru cassette player

I have a '94 Convertible, original stereo (CD player broken). I am trying to play my iPod thru the cassette player with one of those cassette adapters. It works, but it sounds "warbly". When I play a regular cassette tape, it sounds ok. I even bought a new cassette adapter, thinking the one I had was older and may have needed to be replaced.
So I have 2 thoughts, and I'd appreciate any you might have. I am wondering could this be from the dashboard getting hot,(the tape deck is right under it), or might the tape deck need to be cleaned? (I have ignored the CLEAN sign when it comes on). So what are your thoughts?
Thanks.
As an update to a post from a few months ago regarding the car continuing to run after being turned off, if my foot was on the brake, and the key was removed, aha--two light bulbs were burned out, fixed them and voila-car works fine.
