Well, the top of the dash which usually cracks with age seems to be fine. It's the plastic insert where the gauges and buttons go into which is messed up. Lucky everything seems to still work though, and they didn't cut the stereo wires. So it's not as bad as I initially thought.
But exactly - how much could the used stereo be worth? They don't have the code to get it working, and the cops have the serial number. And, funny thing, I think the stereo was on its way out anyway with intermittent problems. So, thieves, enjoy! Idiots.
I guess it's good they came in through the door though, and not slicing through the top. Whew!
At any rate, this has made me think though, and since I'm just not a big convertible fan anyway, and I need something more practical, I might just sell it for cheap. I'm sure someone else can take care of it. A little sad since I've already done so much for the car, and otherwise it's great, but maybe it's a sign or something!
