Last year, I had the good fortune of acquiring my first Saab, a 1989 900 for a very reasonable price. I broke the rules and bought the car from a friend, knowing all about the stories the car has...the several drivers of the car always just called it the Saab("sob") Story, and each driver wrote a new chapter.
Anyhow, it's my turn. I bought the car, immediately switched out the water pump, the belts, and was working on other minor things, as I had to use it as a daily driver. So one day, driving down the highway, it just makes a terrible noise and feels wretched. I pull off, barely make it to the top of the exit ramp, and now the engine locks up. After a good bit of effort I got it unlocked...and without other options, drove it home...that was the last time it saw the road.
It is now a year later and I'm still not exactly sure what all is wrong with it, but from what I can tell, it's enough to constitute an engine swap...now I'm new to this, so the question is, which years would be compatible, and would it be possible to go with a Turbo or anything with a little more get-up? Not that the car wasn't enough fun as it was, I just want to know what my options are. Also, I have two brothers who are much more mechanically-inclined than myself, and who have the proper tools. About how long would it take a 2 and a half man crew to undertake something like this?
I really don't wanna give up on the car. It's not my first car, and it won't be the last, but it will probably always be my favorite. And that's only after driving it for about a month. Thanks a ton for any tips, and feel free to email me.
