In reality, those springs should be replaced when you do the pads, especially if they've been in for a while. Also, the cotter pin that holds the U-shaped piece also deteriorates. And while I'm thinking about it, the U-shaped piece can be a real pain to remove. I found NAPA had the hardware kit in stock so I didn't have to wait for one to arrive from one of the sponsors. If you go that route, make sure beforehand that the kit is for BOTH sides and not just one!

Once you get the U-shaped piece out pull the pads out. Then you will need to rotate the caliper piston back in. There is a special tool for this however I have used a needle-nosed pliers for this...the kind that is hooked at the end. You may need to grind down the end a bit to get it to fit. I've also used a circlip plier. Once you rotate the piston back in, the pads should fit.

I use a good steel brush on the sliding yoke to get all the loose crap off, then dab just a bit of brake grease in the area where it slides.
