Let's Talk More About Vacuum Advance & Centrifugal Adva

There's a thread from yesterday burried further down on the board, but I don't suspect many will see it there.
background: I have a BAD vacuum advance on my '83T, and they're expensive to replace IF one can find them...seems they're very specific to model years :1982 only, 1983 & 1984, 1985 only, 1986-?.
I pulled a vacuum advance off my 1978 99 Turbo. Except for the location of the vacuum nipple, the two units appear identical. Installed 'new' unit on 900 and it idles much better. Only marginal improvement under boost.
So this raises the question, are the vacuum advance units for all turbos essentially the same? Could the only difference be the location of the nipple? Does anyone have practical experience with this?
Also, the 1983 is supposed to have a centrifugal advance mechanism, which I thougt was 'frozen' in mine. Everything in the distributor looks like it's moving fine. I'm not absolutely sure this dist has a centrifugal advance mechanism...or maybe Bentley's test of turning the rotor 1/8 turn against the spring tension is inaccurate.
What exactly am I looking for when assessing the centrifugal advance? I see a parts break down here: http://www.thesaabsite.com/images/halleffectreplacement.gif
but I can't identify the weights and springs I thought I would see.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
